Educational Journey to Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Una

On 26th Feb 2024- A group of 44 B.Sc. Agriculture students from first to fourth academic years embarked on an educational journey to Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Una, accompanied by Mr. Gurwinder Singh Rana and Ms. Ankita Thakur. This immersive visit aimed to provide students with practical insights into agricultural practices and animal sciences.
During the first phase of the visit, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sharma, Extension Specialist Entomology at KVK UNA, captivated the students with field demonstrations. They explored fields of Mustard, Canola, Wheat, Chickpea, Oats, Linseeds & lentils while Dr. Sharma explained the intricate relationships between crops and pollinators. Highlighting the importance of biodiversity, he emphasized the role of Honey bees in crop pollination, particularly in mustard fields. Additionally, Dr. Sharma shed light on the challenges posed by weeds and diseases in chickpea and mustard cultivation. The innovative use of drone technology for herbicide spraying showcased modern agricultural practices. Furthermore, Dr. Sharma introduced the concept of organic farming and showcased various species cultivated under organic methods. The replicated trials of chickpea varieties under the AICRP Project provided students with a glimpse into ongoing agricultural research.
In the second phase of the visit, Dr. Deepali Kapoor, Extension Specialist Animal Sciences, delved into dairy farming practices. She elucidated the diverse breeds of animals, types of milk produced, and common diseases affecting livestock. Through a guided tour of the dairy farm, students gained firsthand knowledge of animal husbandry practices. Dr. Kapoor highlighted the significance of breed selection and management strategies for ensuring optimal productivity. The demonstration of cow and buffalo breeds further enriched the students’ understanding of livestock diversity.
The visit to KVK UNA proved to be an invaluable educational experience, allowing students to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications in agriculture and animal sciences. Such initiatives play a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of agricultural professionals equipped with holistic understanding and practical skills.
