Roshni Mitra (name changed), is a Features Editor with one of India's largest selling women's magazines. She has been a journalist for the last 10 years. She says when she started out with, journalism was not considered even half as hot as it is today. "The remuneration was a bit of a joke. So those long workdays would seldom yield much in terms of increments. No special qualification was required and you were made to learn on the job -- which isn't a bad thing really. But what you learnt depended a much on how inspiring your seniors were. I would say I was lucky to have a boss who sat me down one day and corrected a copy, line by line, in front of me. That half hour taught me more about writing copies than anything else has."

Over the years, Mitra says the scene has become far more professional. Journalism is fairly paying now and there are plenty of avenues to explore. On her growth path, Mitra recalls she started out as a trainee where she was given some pages to handle which would duly be supervised by others. Once she climbed the ladder a bit more, she was asking to handle a particular section of the newspaper myself. This meant ensuring there was a bank of relevant and interesting articles and being held responsible for the section. Currently, as Features editor she brings out an entire broadsheet supplements, city-specific sections and a smaller version of the magazine in her own. To succeed in this sphere, Mitra says one needs to be sensitive and alert to things happening around you. Creativity, ideation and being able to put it across lucidly and crisply are of primary importance. You have to be able to smell out a story where others see none. It is also important to build a network in order to smell the right story," she says.

 The bare minimum
A knowledge of 2-D and 3-D animation and graphics software like Autodesk's 3ds Max, Alias's Maya or Adobe's Creative Suite, is now expected as a bare minimum to enter the creative end of the business.

While private training institutes like Arena Multimedia, Toonz Webel Academy, Animaster, Ants Animation Training School and Image Infotainment, have been doing a commendable job, their output is still a drop in the ocean. On March 18, Mukta Arts inaugurated Whistling Woods International, said to be the largest of its kind, film, TV and media arts institute in Asia, spread across 20 acres at Mumbai's Film City.

On the last day of `Frames' FICCI launched a new forum to drive animation and gaming initiatives in India and to reach out to the huge traditional artistic base in India. Its annual Best Animation Frames (BAF) Awards are already seen as one of the industry's most prestigious accolades and this year's winners spanned entries from half a dozen nations.

Interestingly, while Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, are emerging as major centres of Indian animation talent, it is Kerala that has quietly put into place the country's first Special Economic Zone (SEZ) exclusively devoted to animation and gaming. The 15,000 square metre complex has already come up within the larger 25-acre Film and Video (FV) Park of the Kerala State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (KINFRA), on the outskirts of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.

The FV park is banking on its stunning locale as well as its logistical advantage, vis-a-vis growing markets like Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and Singapore, and hopes that `Created at KINFRA' will be a small but significant line in the end credits of tomorrow's animated Indian contributions to global entertainment.
